Bunions

A bunion is when your big toe is angled towards the second toe which causes a bump on the side at the base of the big toe, there is often thickening of the skin and tissues next to the affected joint, the thickened skin and tissues can become inflamed, swollen and painful. Sometimes a fluid filled sac develops over the joint.

What causes bunions?

They are usually caused by a deformity of the joint at the base of the big toe. The deformity is called 'hallux valgus'. Within the deformity the joint develops a sideways angle, which pushes the big toe towards the smaller toes.

The skin over the bunion joint tends to rub on the inside of shoes and this can cause inflammation and soreness.

Its not clear why bunions develop. It could be hereditary weakness of the joint, sometimes it is associated with a joint problem such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis.

Whatever the cause, wearing tight or badly fitting shoes can make symptoms worse. Wearing tight fitting shoes puts extra pressure on the big toe joint and causes friction on the skin.

The symptoms of bunions:
* You may get some pain and difficulty walking
* Swelling at the base of the toe, which can become infected.
* Feet can become too wide to fit into a standard width shoe.

Good fitting footwear is often all that is needed:
Wearing good fitting footwear doesn’t cure the problem but it can ease symptoms of pain and discomfort. Get advice about footwear from a podiatrist or chiropodist.
They may advise you to:
* Wear shoes, trainers or slippers that fit well and are roomy.
* Don't wear high-heeled, pointed or tight shoes.

Diabetic Feet

What are the symptoms of diabetic feet?

Diabetes is a fairly common illness, and many people do not even realise that they have it.  Some symptoms are hunger and blurred vision.

Patients with diabetes also experience fatigue, found themselves urinating more frequently than normal, and are always thirsty.

Problems such as Charcot foot and neuropathy develop as a symptom of chronic diabetes.

Diabetic Foot Care

Diabetes feet are very sensitive. If you are a diabetic, make sure to go to a podiatrist once you see a sign of any abnormality on your feet.

Remember that as a diabetic, your body is unable to produce the chemicals necessary to heal.

Take care of your feet As a diabetic

You should take very good care of your feet. Wash them in warm (NEVER hot) water daily. Make it a habit to inspect your feet regularly – use a mirror to see your soles if you have to.

Avoid walking barefoot or wearing shoes that expose your toes to lessen the risk for injury and infections.

Remember to wear socks made of cotton and other natural fibers, and shoes that fit correctly. In some cases, custom orthotics may help ease pressure on your feet.
